:bulletblack:  In my last relationship, I allowed granted my boyfriend, now ex, the permission to use a dear character of mine. When we broke up here, just at the end of March, I told him he can't use the character anymore since we're not together anymore and he refused, claiming I 'gifted' it when I never did! He literally twisted my words out of context when I told him that he only had my permission to use the character since we were together. I got a good friend, who can back me up on this since he wanted to use the character first, but I allowed my mate to use it since we were together.

I talked to the original artist I adopted the character and its counterpart from and they told me the character that I let him use is still mine since there is no written contract of me turning the character over to him.
My ex has tried to extort me for $2700 to 'buy back' the character, threatened me with lawyers and tried to bribe me from getting my original I got from the original artist. He also lied to an artist when he commissioned them for a ref sheet - claiming 'he adopted the character' when I did. The artist, who he commissioned for the ref, has taken action against him, reporting as well as blocking him.

I have my originals as well as I have the PP receipt as proof of purchase. I have my ex blocked since he's a liar and cheater.
Does anyone know what else I can do?

Have you been given a subpoena yet? If not then he doesn't have a lawyer or an attorney working for him. If you ever get one as you stated the original artist has your back get a statement from them that explains in detail that the characters are yours you bought them (or were gifted to you) as a set. You still have a POP and all he has a claim of a verbal exchange they happened between you, him and a friend as a witness to the event. In short he doesn't have much of a civil case against you in being able to keep the character he more or less borrowed from you for the time that was your relationship. Also if he does manage to bring you to court over this you'd have too much Burden of Proof that the character is in fact still yours. Most of the time is these cases you have to have proof that equals 51% in your favor in court. Also as for any "verbal" contract he's claiming generally don't hold up in courts.

Also don't slander him over the internet in any way shape or form, because this could be view as defamation of character. But I do know in the community of art there are areas to post a 'do not commission this person/artist' and 'do not accept commissions/trades from this person' as a way the community protects itself. I'm not fully sure if warning people of possible problems truly falls under defamation because true defamation of character is untrue statements. Hope this helps you a bit. :) And good luck with everything.
